About Bay Saint Louis, Mississippi

Why on earth would you go to Bay St. Louis, Mississippi? Well, that depends on you and your tastes! Do you like to shop? Do you like to explore the history of the gulf coast? Do you like to gamble? I could go on, but you get the point. There are really no valid reasons not to go to Bay St. Louis on vacation.

Hurricane Katrina came roaring towards the Mississippi Gulf Coast on the morning of Aug. 29, 2005, bringing devastating 120 mph winds, a nearly 30-foot storm surge and 55-foot sea waves. To be honest, Hurricane Katrina kicked Bay St. Louis’ butt, but, in keeping with the grit and determination of the region, the town pulled together and put the pieces back together.  It wasn’t easy, though. The amount of destruction was unlike this section of the Gulf Coast had ever seen. Places that had never flooded were many feet underwater. Today, it has been re-built bigger and better.

Most people have a penchant for old architecture, local history and antique stores. Bay St. Louis is a perfect vacation destination for studying the past; it is a small town city (population 9,408) that's a mix of Southern grace, mystery, and heat. Bay St. Louis is located about 90 miles east of New Orleans; it is resting at the junction of marsh, river, and Gulf of Mexico beach.

The best spot to sunbathe and relax is at the end of Main Street; there is a marshland to the north and an open bay to the south, east, and west. Take Beach Boulevard's bike/walk path along the wide, sandy beach for three miles from Washington Avenue American Legion Pier in town to the Garfield Ladner Pier in Waveland.

Bay St. Louis has one of the best NASA facilities in the country. Don’t forget to take a tour at the Stennis Space Center while vacationing in Bay St. Louis and discover why so many people have a passion for space! The Stennis Space Center hosts thousands of tourists all year long and the employees are comfortable touring a small or large crowd. The tour lasts about an hour and is very entertaining as well as educational.

Bay St. Louis offers Las Vegas style gaming action from many casinos dotted along the coast. If you don’t require much sleep, you try your luck around the clock.  If you’re a novice, there are slot machines galore; if you enjoy table games then you’re in luck (pun intended) because everything from blackjack to stud poker is ready and waiting.

Like most Gulf Coast towns and cities, Bay St. Louis does a thriving tourism business in the charter fishing industry. If you and your family go for three hours or all day, you’re sure to come back with meat for the table. Only locals fish without a guide. When you have a week or two to fit in a lot of activities, hire a guide and do it right. Fishing is fun if you catch something.

Come to Bay St. Louis and enjoy yourself; there’s plenty to do and see. Bring your imagination and have fun.
