About Clayton, Georgia

Highway 441 is often called the “gateway to the Smokies” as you travel up from the Piedmont and Coastal areas of the Southeast. This route to the mountains begins in the flat coastal plains and travels through the rolling hills of the Piedmont. If you keep heading north the terrain begins to change dramatically once you enter Tallulah Falls on the southern end of Rabun County. You’re now officially in the mountains. Now, it’s time to ease back on the throttle and enjoy some amazing scenery.

There are many quaint mountain towns along this route, and each has its own individual points of interest. Rabun County lies at the base of Black Mountain and Clayton, Georgia is the county seat.  Although similar in many respects, Clayton is a unique mountain community. Clayton is fortunate to have a beautiful downtown filled with eclectic stores and restaurants. Main Street is loaded with upscale clothing stores, home decor and accessory shops as well as many fine eateries featuring award-winning chefs. Clayton has the reputation of being the Farm to Table Capital of Georgia. These local shops feature the best in art, antiques, books, flowers, furniture, gifts, wine and much more. There’s even an old fashioned drug store soda fountain. Walk under the rustic old trees of downtown Clayton, breathe in the fresh mountain air and enjoy the culture of our unique mountain community.

Clayton has much to offer than its downtown, however. Many church youth groups and people looking for whitewater action come to Clayton and stay in one of the many vacation rental units as they prepare to raft down the Chattooga. Whitewater rafting on the Chattooga River, a nationally designated "Wild & Scenic" river, is a memory making experience. While you’re in the area, you may as well ride some of the guided horse trails, or strike on your own depending on your riding skills. There are waterfalls and overlooks that can be seen simply by pulling over and stopping.  The Bartram Trail, designated a national recreation trail, runs through Clayton and is a “must see” location. Quaker William Bartram created this trail more than 200 years ago, and it spans over 40 miles.

For those who enjoy a little sip of the fruit of the vine, visitors and tourists must stop at the Tiger Mountain Vineyard and Stonewall Creek Vineyards, both of which have outdoor decks and patios for your mountain viewing pleasure.

The Mountains are closer than you think!!
