Grand Rapids began as a logging town in the early 1900’s. The location was ideal for the transportation of freshly sawn logs to travel down the Mississippi River. This small burg was the northern most point that a steam boat could safely travel because this was basically the head waters of this great river.
After much deliberation, the founders of Grand Rapids decided on a name based on a three mile stretch of rapids that coursed past the area. However, the construction of a dam by the Blandin Paper Mill completely submerged these rapids.
Its current economy depends heavily on tourism. There are many local resorts, golf courses and over one million acres of public and industrial forestlands that provide excellent regional hunting, and more than 1,000 lakes for fishing. The tourism industry employs thousands of people due to a large seasonal and weekend population of summer residences on surrounding lakes, and a number of smaller bedroom communities located near Grand Rapids.
There are several events and activities for tourists and vacationers to enjoy throughout the year. The summer season is the most active when visitors can admire antique automobiles at the Itasca Vintage Car Show. There’s also a major golf tournament and July 4th events to enjoy.
