Named after a North Carolina Supreme Court Chief Justice Leonard Henderson, Hendersonville was founded in 1838. The downtown area has retained a vintage look dating to the early 1900s. There are retail boutiques, antique shops, cafes, and tourist driven outlets in this part of town. The Henderson County Courthouse and City Hall were both constructed during this era and have been renovated with the original architectural designs kept in place. However, with a population of approximately 13,000, Hendersonville, N.C. has shopping malls and commercial strips extending outward along Highway 64, which is the main thoroughfare, and Highway 176.
Because of the mild climate, Hendersonville, N.C. lends itself to outdoor activities year round. In the Spring and Summer there are local and state parks, bike and jogging trails, foot tours of the city to name a few. Obviously the turning of the leaves occupy most of the Fall.
