About Hunter, New York

Are you ready for some fun? I mean hard core, adrenaline pumping fun, not sitting around fun. Well, Hunter NY is the place for you. The number one attraction in the town of Hunter involves activities on Hunter Mountain.    Hunter Mountain is the highest peak in the county and the second highest in the Catskills. The mountain is open for skiing and tubing in the winter and biking, sightseeing and hiking in the summer so that visitors and tourists will find something to do regardless of the season. For a super thrill, visitors take a trip on the state’s highest zip line which is available all year. However, the ski resort is the largest employer in the village, which means the economy and incomes of the locals fluctuate depending on the season. Because of this, the seasonal nature of the mountain regulates the economic activity of Hunter NY.

The spectacular scenery, the vistas and the many waterfalls and hiking trails attracted writers, artists, poets and famous people in the nineteenth century. In order to provide lodging for these tourists, boarding houses and huge hotels were built. Over the years rental houses, cabins and chalets have grown in popularity. The scenery and natural beauty of Hunter and surrounding areas still attract visitors and tourists from around the United States and the world.

For over 40 years, the village of Hunter has been home to a summer camp going by the name of Camp Loyaltown. The camp specializes in caring for individuals with intellectual and other developmental disabilities, including autism, emotional and behavioral disorders, cerebral palsy and Down syndrome. Every year, more than 650 guests come to Camp Loyaltown to enjoy the scenic locale and traditional summer camp activities. The camp attracts staff from all over the world that specializes in the issues brought by the campers to this wonderful place.
