AND THEY’RE OFF… since 1875 the first Saturday in May always marks the world famous Kentucky Derby at historic Churchill Downs.  Louisville host a two week long Kentucky Derby Festival that kicks off with “Thunder over Louisville,” the largest fireworks show in the United States.  Historic steamboat races on the Ohio River, hot air balloon competitions, marathons, parades, balls, wine tastings, and too much more to mention all build up to “the most exciting two minutes in sports.”  Check your bucket list; Kentucky vacation house rentals are available for front row seats to all of the excitement.

While in Louisville, if golf is your game, eastern Louisville boasts Valhalla Golf Club.  When Valhalla opened in 1986, this private club was one of the most exclusive of its kind in the country; only members, caddies, and the occasional opportune guest were granted entrance to this Jack Nicklaus designed masterpiece.  In 1996 the PGA bought fifty percent of the club and while Valhalla is still private, it’s now far more accessible to the general public.  Valhalla hosted the 1996 and 2000 PGA Championships along with the 2008 Ryder Cup.  The front nine is laid out in a classic European links design while the back nine carves its way through trees in a customary American fashion; Valhalla Golf Club is one of the premier courses in the world.
