Lake Toxaway NC
Before air conditioning was commonly found everywhere, people had to find some sort of respite from the summer heat. For that reason, many were drawn to Lake Toxaway, North Carolina. Celebrated dignitaries and notable families, such as the Fords, the Edisons, and the Rockefellers, were drawn to the clear, crystal waters and invigorating mountain breezes that provided welcomed relief from the thick, stagnant heat of summer. It wasn't long before the inn and the area became renown for world class cuisine and outstanding recreational opportunities.
However, there was a set of catastrophes culminating with the dam breaking in 1913 that curtailed the growth of this beautiful part of the western North Carolina Blue Ridge Mountains. As a matter of fact, Lake Toxaway remained nonexistent until 1960 when Reg Heinitsh and a group of investors rebuilt the dam, restored the lake, and began attracting a new generation of visitors.
