Maggie cried!! When she found out that her name was to be used to identify the first post office, she wept with embarrassment, but at 14 it’s easy to be embarrassed. Her father applied for a permit to open the post office, which required a name, and hers was the only one available from the ones he submitted. Today, the silhouette of a young lady wearing a bonnet is recognized as the symbol for Maggie Valley.
Maggie Valley has 1,223 permanent residents based on a 2013 count. Although the town is not big, the valley is packed with activities to keep you entertained. Ghost Town Amusement Park is 4,650 feet above sea level and perched on top of Buck Mountain. To get there, you must ride a tram. The park was constructed to resemble a western town from the 1800s as depicted on television shows such as Bonanza or Gunsmoke. Recently a zip line has been installed and if you want an unforgettable thrill, buckle up and give this ride a try.
Maggie Valley offers entertainment of all kinds. In the summer, you can experience the “the Great Smokie Mountain Golf” course. The terrain, doglegs and views are nothing like you will experience elsewhere. Many visitors to Maggie Valley take advantage of the miles of biking and hiking trails. The favorite thing to do, however, is to cruise the Blue Ridge Parkway. Maggie Valley is convenient to Dollywood and Gatlinburg or Cherokee and gambling. If you’re a biker, they hold an awesome Harley rally every spring.
