About Manteo, North Carolina

The first thing you need to do is book a reservation to stay on Ocracoke Island, the only true island not linked by bridge or road to the mainland. After you select a date, download a North Carolina Ferry Guide offered by the Department of Transportation. Then order and pay for advance tickets to this wonderful little piece of heaven.

Depending on how you define vacation will determine the options on where you stay. Camping sites are offered as are bed and breakfast homes and beach houses. There are hundreds to choose from with differing prices so we have something to fit your vacation budget.

Most of our guests just want to relax and chill out on our beach; it is 16 miles long so privacy is not an issue. However, if you want to frolic in the sea there are surfboard, kayak or parasail rentals available as well as surf fishing. If you’re an adrenaline junkie, deep sea fishing that will get it pumping. Crashing through the surf on a 50 foot outside boat as you head to the Gulf Stream is an incredible experience. If you hang a big ole tuna, you’ll never forget it. If you get it on board you’ll be eating tuna a long time. An Atlantic bluefin tuna can weigh 1,000 pounds or more.

If you prefer something a little tamer, hop aboard a sightseeing boat tour and explore Portsmouth Island which is uninhabited.  The beach is littered with awesome shells. It will give you an idea of what the beaches looked like before man came along.

This little island is loaded with history. Blackbeard the pirate was killed here during a fierce battle with the English in 1718 and then beheaded. There are rumors to this day that he wanders Ocracoke during the night looking for his head.

The downtown is perfect for shopping for souvenirs. After all, tourism is how the locals survive. There are around 600 permanent residents living on Ocracoke and catering to the visitors is the way most of them make a living.

Okay, so here’s the deal. There is enough room on Ocracoke for about 7,000 visitors a week during the season which generally run from Memorial Day to Labor Day. Make sure you plan ahead with anticipation of a great vacation on Ocracoke Island!
