About Mountain Village, Colorado

The town of Mountain Village, Colorado is a booming metropolis boasting over 1,300 permanent residents. The old adage, “location, location, location”, certainly applies to this fair burg. Incorporated in 1995, Mountain Village is one of the newer resort communities in the Telluride community.  Mountain Village is home to "The Core", which is filled with shops, restaurants and more! In the winter, it is the main access point for skiing. The public plazas in Mountain Village host a variety of commercial establishments and outdoor activities. The Beach Plaza is adjacent to the ski area and is home to the gondola’s Station Mountain Village. The Heritage Plaza is in the very heart of Mountain Village and is surrounded by shops, restaurants and other establishments.

An important aspect of Mountain Village is the gondola system connecting various sections of Telluride. The free gondola connects Telluride to Mountain Village with one of the most scenic public transportation routes in the world. The gondola begins at the base of Oak Street in Telluride and ends in the Mountain Village Core. It may not be the reason why you come here, but once you discover our preferred form of transportation, the car keys will be stored in a drawer for the duration of your vacation. The gondola, the first and only free public transportation of its kind in the United States, was inaugurated in 1996. It was originally constructed to help improve air quality and expand the skiing industry at the same time. The gondola has helped to make Mountain Village a vacation destination and is visited by thousands of tourists yearly as it puts them up close and personal  with Mother Nature at 10,500 feet above sea level.
