About Murphy, North Carolina

Recreational activities are unlimited from local trout streams to mountain biking. Hiwassee Lake is considered one of the most beautiful in the state. Murphy offers something for every sports enthusiast. If you are looking for a beautiful small town in the mountains, look no further.

Murphy is a wonderful town to visit while on vacation if you are looking for a rural and quiet place. The town of Murphy is the county seat of Cherokee County and is located in the heart of the Appalachian Mountains. Murphy is an old town with its origin dating back to 1839. Downtown is beautiful with tree lined streets and many historic buildings restored to their original state.  The town is small with many antique stores and restaurants located throughout, and all are within walking distance in the heart of town.

The nearby lakes and rivers offer fishing, boating, skiing and spectacular sights with the mountains as the back drop. Recreational activities are unlimited from local trout streams to mountain biking. Hiwassee Lake, by the way, is considered one of the most beautiful in the state. You really need to come see for yourself.

For the hiking and biking enthusiasts, the mountains offer unlimited trails for beginners or advanced participants. To further entice these athletes, Murphy is constructing 22 miles of recreational hiking and mountain biking trails on a 700 acre tract in the Murphy Watershed.

Of course, there are those of us do not enjoy the mountain hikes canoeing  or strenuous activities, so we sit on a deck or restaurant booth and enjoy views of the mountains and watch a weather front come over the hill while nursing a cold one. Each to his or her own, I always say! Cheers.

The weather in Murphy is moderate. There will be a few really cold days, a day or two with snow, which is usually off the roads by noon, a few hot days, 50 inches of rain per year and the summer humidity is tolerable.

Murphy is especially festive during a holiday; that’s when the hometown spirit comes alive with parades at Christmas and 4th of July. As far as the other times of the year, you have walking trails, baseball fields and picnic areas with bathrooms just outside of town that provide plenty of entertainment. There are many wineries and breweries within driving distance.

Murphy, with its population of around 1700 people, resembles a Norman Rockwell painting. It is indeed small town life at the very best. We look forward to seeing you!
