About Saranac, New York

In order for a place to attract vacationers, it needs an event, location or landmark that people want to visit. In the case of Saranac Lake, NY, there is something to see, do or participate in year round.  Saranac Lake, NY is a quaint little town in the scenic northern Adirondack Mountains. The lakeside community is situated within ten miles of the famed Olympic village of Lake Placid in northern New York State. Established in a backdrop of majestic mountains, lush forest and pristine lakes and streams, Saranac Lake offers four distinctly different seasons: the beauty of springtime in the Adirondacks, summer hiking and camping in the rugged wild country, the breathtaking autumn’s colors and winter funfests combine to make Saranac Lake a preferred area in New York to vacation.

Saranac Lake was named the best small town in New York State and ranked 11th in the United States in The 100 Best Small Towns in America. In 1998, the National Civic League named Saranac Lake an All-America City and in 2006, the village was named one of the "Dozen Distinctive Destinations" by the National Trust for Historic Preservation. 186 buildings in the village are listed on the National Register of Historic Places, making the village a great attraction for lovers of history and architecture. Thanks to the Historic Saranac Lake, a not-for-profit organization historical preservation group, many historical homes and businesses were spared from the wrecking ball of progress. The village's traditions from long ago continue today.

Saranac Lake offers activities for vacationers throughout the year. During the spring and summer seasons, visitors enjoy boating, hiking, mountain climbing, camping and visiting the local shops and restaurants. The majority of the Main Street shops are locally owned and operated. The Village of Saranac Lake also has free concerts in Riverside Park on Lake Flower and the Berkley Green Park.
During the fall and winter months, cross country and downhill skiing, snowshoeing, ice skating, and snowmobiling are popular activities. There is an annual 10 day winter carnival that has taken place every winter since 1897. The carnival's main attraction is the ice palace which is made with blocks of ice taken from Lake Flower and illuminated with colored lights.

Well, here you have it! Saranac Lake is a place to come and enjoy anytime of the year. The prospects for fun and adventure are endless. This entire area of the Adirondacks is brimming with history and nature. You really need to come and visit. See for yourself. So, make plans to include Saranac Lake in your next vacation!
