Talk about a big lake? Smith Mountain Lake is really big, especially for a manmade lake. There are over 500 miles of shore line and it is 40 miles long which make it the largest manmade lake in Virginia. Although Smith Mountain Lake is only 49 years old, its popularity has made it one of the preferred vacation spots in the state.
Smith Mountain Lake is in a valley surrounded by the Blue Ridge Mountains. The views from this lake range from beautiful to breathtaking, depending on the time of year. Obviously the summer months are the most popular because of all the water activities available. Pontoon and bass boats are probably the most visible but there are also runabouts, canoes and sailing. For the young or young at heart, skiing, parasailing and wakeboarding are favorites. If you bring a boat, there are public launching sites ringing the lake. By the way, if you have a high powered bass boat, the average water depth is 750 feet so there are no worries about hitting anything submerged just under the water. For those who have never been 70 mph on the water, it is exhilarating and scary at the same time!!
