Back in the 1840s everywhere in the Blue Ridge Mountains was in the middle of nowhere. Valle Crucis was no exception. An Episcopal missionary came to this area and decided that this beautiful valley was going to be his home. He may have decided that this spot was divinely appointed because three rivers intersected and resembled the cross. The gentleman, Levi Ives, founded the first Episcopal Church in the region. Thus, the town of Valle Crucis, which is Latin for “Vale of the Cross”, began its existence.
Sometimes the fickle finger of fate will smile on a place or a person and, for no particular reason, good things begin to happen. Back in the 1970s Valle Crucis was the recipient of such fate. Buildings were falling down and, although the valley was still as pretty as ever, the area was stagnant. People visiting the mountains began to take note of the beauty and serenity and slowly a transformation started to take place.
Today there are new homes and retail establishments to complement the original town. The townspeople have actively sought tourism and the traffic it brings. Bed and breakfast inns as well as rental cabins are in abundance. There are restaurants catering to a variety of flavors. You can find an event or festival of some sort almost every month. Fly fishing, hiking, whitewater rafting, skiing and tubing are some of the activities that require either a little or a lot of physical exertion. If you prefer something a little less exciting, then tour the winery at the Farmhouse and participate in a little tasting of the grape. That’s much less strenuous.
Valle Crucis is a happening place! They have figured out how to cater to tourists and offer goods and services that are desirous. It’s hard to explain; you really need to come and see for yourself. Then you’ll understand. See you soon!!
