These lyrics are the beginning of a famous song written by Joni Mitchell about the Woodstock Festival that took place in 1969. When you mention “Woodstock” it congers up images of hippies, music, mud and 400,000 young people, with or without clothes, dancing in the rain during the most famous three day music concert ever produced. Woodstock, NY, a town that will always be remembered!!
This infamous event took place on Max Yasgur’s farm in Bethel NY but the interesting fact that most people don’t realize is that Yasger’s farm is actually about a two hour drive from Woodstock NY.
So, why visit Woodstock, NY? Because it’s a neat town with lots of character and characters. It has been a haven for artists, writers, eclectic thinkers, and musicians since the early 1900’s. Plus, it’s only 2 hours from Max Yasgur’s farm.
Woodstock NY has maintained its early 20th century look and feel over the years. Unlike many towns that have knocked down their heritage and history on Main Street in favor of more modern buildings, Woodstock is a treasure. There is so much to do in this small town and so many things to see.
Artists have opened and owned galleries in Woodstock for over a century displaying their creations. Writers find this quiet setting and comfortable aura perfect for linguistic endeavors. Film festivals and outdoor concerts are not uncommon. The downtown area is alive with activity. You can stroll down Main Street and wander into clothing stores, art galleries, gift stores, music stores or flea markets. The coolest stuff can be found in these places. Don’t forget dining! You gotta eat! You want a hot dog? No problem!! How about a fancy sit down five star restaurant. We’re good with that. Locally owned eateries are in abundance and some of them even grow their own produce and serve it fresh when in season.
Remember Woodstock NY when you’re ready to take a trip down memory lane. It’s two hours or closer to most major cities in the New York-New England area and it’s a great place to come and unwind from the pressures of the city.
