In the late 1800s Mr. James Walker Tufts bought a sizable chunk of land, 6,000 acres, with the intention of building a town and growing peaches. In addition to peach orchards he had a vision to build a town that was similar to a New England style village where people could come and recuperate from illnesses in a spa-like environment.
Ever the entrepreneur, Tufts had the idea to build a golf course and in 1900 he hired Donald Ross to design a course and that was the beginning. Today this area of the Piedmont includes over 40 courses, 270,000 total yards and over 720 holes of golfing ecstasy with 54 more holes in the works. 165 miles of fairways; that is greater than 2,800 football fields! As the evangelist would say, “can I get a witness?”
Although golf is the backbone of this community, there are other activities available. Tours of the villages and historic homes, a driving tour of the various golf courses, equestrian and horticulture gardens are some of the varied recreations you may enjoy.
Pinehurst and the surrounding area is a “go to” destination. It is not conveniently near an interstate, but because of this, the unique small town flavor has survived for over a century.
