Any town that’s a college town is an exciting town to visit. Blacksburg Virginia is a perfect example of a college town. It’s the home of Virginia Tech, the third largest university in Virginia. With a student enrollment of more than 31,000, the campus is by far the largest employer in Blacksburg.
Because the college has such an impact on the community, there are an abundance of restaurants, cafes, coffee shops, retail shops, places to stay, and things to do. The downtown area is quaint and rustic with shops and eateries that are locally owned. Cafes and restaurants offering a variety of food ranging from hamburgers to filet mignon are plentiful. The arts are highly promoted with displays in almost every retail establishment. There’s also a seasonal farmers market which has locally grown produce available. The atmosphere is welcoming and friendly; you will immediately sense the sincerity after speaking with a local.
Beginning in late August through November, there is only one topic of conversation in Blacksburg. “What could that be?” you ask. Well, it starts with foot and ends in ball. That’s right, Virginia Tech football!! The town becomes an orange and maroon oasis surrounded by acres of changing leaves from the hard wood trees and brilliant shades of green from the pines and cedars during the fall season.
Virginia Tech was founded in 1872 and has gone through several name changes. Finally, in 1970, the state legislature determined that the official name to be Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. However, that was still a mouth full to chant at a football game so it was shortened to Virginia Tech.
Let’s be very clear about one important character regarding Virginia Tech; there is no such creature, plant or animal named “Hokie”. It is part of a team spirit chant dating back to the early 1900s. The Hokiebird, which is now the team mascot, bears a faint resemblance to a turkey/cardinal mix resplendent in orange and maroon colors. Even if you can’t get a ticket to a football game (they are usually sold out), being a part of the pre-and post-game events is a hoot!
What else is there to do? The Blue Ridge Parkway is near. You can hike or bike on the various trails in the area. Come visit us and find out how much fun and enjoyment you can have in this little college town.
