About Cherokee, North Carolina

Cherokee, North Carolina has roots that run as deep as the deepest river and as high as the tallest mountain. At one time Cherokee was not a town, but rather a settlement for the Cherokee Nation.  Today, it is the home of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians. The Eastern Band of Cherokee Nation is one of only three federally recognized Cherokee tribes, and there are roughly 15,300 members, most of who live on the Reservation. Properly called the Qualla Boundary, the Reservation is slightly more than 56,000 acres held in trust by the federal government.

Cherokee is one of the premier vacation destinations in the country. The appeal of this area is many faceted. Visitors are welcome from all walks of life. There are many things to do and see that cost little or nothing. If you’re interested in the history and folklore of the Cherokee people, tour the many outstanding museums; sit in on a legendary outdoor drama; or visit the annual Pow Wow. Some of the noteworthy attractions are “Unto These Hills Outdoor Drama” and the Oconaluftee Indian Village.  Open year-round is the impressive Museum of the Cherokee with many events and special experiences.

When I was little, Cherokee was a treasure trove of good stuff. I grew up in the era of cowboys and Indians on TV; “Wagon Train”, “Rawhide”, “Gunsmoke” and many more television shows filled a young man’s head with dreams of yesteryear. Going to Cherokee on vacation was the best!! A bow and arrow or a real whip was better than silver and gold. Going to the many tourist retail shops was better than Ralphie getting his Red Ryder BB gun, trust me. Mama had to put a leash on me just to keep me at hand. Many of these shops have been handed down from parent to child are still there waiting for you to browse the many shops clustered along two main roads, Tsali Blvd (US Highway 441) and Tsalagi Road (US Highway 19). They still have all of the “must have” items you might expect on an Indian Reservation so it is absolutely necessary that you stock up on mocassins and other Native American souvenirs; buy fine quality crafts such as Cherokee Indian pottery, baskets and beadwork; pick up some locally-made gifts such as dreamcatchers, dolls and woodcrafts.

However, many tourists and vacationers don’t come for the typical touristy items. Their goal is much, much larger, and that is to cash out on the big score. Harrah’s Cherokee Casino Resort is owned by the Eastern Band of Cherokee. It is located at the entrance to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, in the town of Cherokee and Jackson County. Some visitors go there experience a fun day of incidental gambling as well as dining at one of the many restaurants. Harrah’s includes 150,000 square feet of gaming space, so there's something for everyone including 3,800 slots and 158 table games. Exciting live action include Blackjack for a fast-paced game of 21, Craps and the most popular game played in the world, Roulette.
