About Edinburg, Virginia

The tranquility and Southern genteelism associated with the old South conjures images of rolling mountains and mint juleps. Edinburg, Virginia is nestled in the upper edge of the Shenandoah Valley, which is one of the most spectacularly pristine areas in the United States. As you pass through the section of our great country, you get a sense that this is a special place. Edinburg, Virginia is fortunate in that it is located here. Because of its location, tourists and visitors come to Edinburg to stay as they visit the town and surrounding areas as well as passing through on their journeys up and down Interstate 81. Edinburg is a small town of approximately 1,000 residents nestled in the center of Shenandoah County, Virginia. Situated between Winchester and Harrisonburg, Edinburg is an easy exit off of I-81.

If you are a history buff, Edinburg is just the place for you. One of the most visited tourist attractions in the Shenandoah Valley is the Edinburg Mill which was built by Major George Grandstaff in 1848.  It is one of only a few that survived "The Burning" during the Civil War and it was in continuous operation until 1979

Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, located in Edinburg's Historic District, the mill is a designated Virginia Historic Landmark.  It is located on the historic Valley Pike, (U.S. Route 11), and serves as a prominent and scenic resource along this designated Virginia Scenic Byway.

Now home to a visitor center and the "Museum at the Edinburg Mill", the Museum tells the story of the mill, the town, the Valley Pike, the Shenandoah River, and the railroad.  A 50 seat theater features a 45 minute film entitled, "The Burning" based on John Heatwole's book of the same name.  The Foundation operates a gift shop and additional retail businesses and another full service restaurant are planned to open during 2012.

The downtown of Edinburg is really a small eclectic town so quaint that you can’t resist a purchase of something, be it art, apparel, meals from the locally owned eateries and tourist driven retail outlets. The buildings in the downtown area are old and full of character. You get a feeling that this place has been around a long time. Vacationers are always amazed at the friendliness of the locals and their willingness to help.

So, when you’re headed our way, you may as well plan on spending a week or two in our fair city. Edinburg is a hidden jewel located up in the Blue Ridge Mountains, but down in the valley, the Shenandoah Valley.
