Fredericksburg, Virginia Vacation Rentals

About Fredericksburg, Virginia

Fredericksburg, Virginia has a long history of involvement. For example, it was involved in the exploration and protection of the Colonies way back in the 1600s. Its location on the Rappahannock River made Fredericksburg at jumping off point as settlers pushed away from the coast and slowly moved inland. Fredericksburg was heavily involved in the Civil War; two battles were fought for control of this important port city; one in 1862 and one in 1863. Because of these two battles, much of the original city was obliterated. After the war the city was involved in the reconstruction of its infrastructure as well as the surrounding communities that suffered terribly…and so on and so on.

Fredericksburg is located on the I-95 midway between Richmond and Washington, D.C. It has become a bedroom community for the capital over the decades. A commuter rail line – the Virginia Railway Express – was established in the 1980s, and provided passage to Washington, D.C. and other cities north of Fredericksburg. This eased, somewhat, the commute of car drivers.

Besides the history that enshrouds Fredericksburg, there are many other activities that await you. From battlefields and museums to water fun, hiking trails and children's activities, Fredericksburg has something for every member of the family.

Historic Downtown Fredericksburg features numerous specialty, retail, craft and antique shops in restored 18th- and 19th-century buildings. There are cultural and entertainment events presented by Mary Washington College as well as the Fredericksburg Theater Company.

In addition, the city operates several parks, including a 211-acre recreation area on both sides of the Rappahannock River. Four Civil War battlefields are maintained by the National Park Service, too.

Visitors and vacationers seeking a true vacation destination should come to Fredericksburg for a few days. Because of its proximity to Washington, many tourists use Fredericksburg as a base and travel to other parts of Northern Virginia to explore the many sites available.

A rich and vibrant history awaits you in Fredericksburg as it combines the old and the new; that’s what makes Fredericksburg a fun and relaxing place, and it’s only an hour’s drive from Washington DC. The downtown area is easily walked and because it is a National Historic Site, you can easily mix the old with the new. Although Fredericksburg is filled with Colonial and Civil War sites, it also has a modern vibe with shops, galleries, and locally owned restaurants lining the streets.
