There is a certain low country atmosphere that runs along the South Carolina coast from Charleston to Savannah, Georgia. If you have spent any time in this part of the country, you know what I mean. It’s not something you can see, feel, hear, or taste, it’s more like a subconscious knowing. The history in this area runs long and deep. The folklore of pirates, the Gullahs, battles of the Revolutionary and Civil wars make up a history full of tales and ghost stories. Fripp Island has its fair share of stories and tales, let me tell you.
Fripp Island was once a haven for weary pirates coming back from sea. It had a perfect climate and pleasing landscape which served as a quiet oasis for those men who robbed, raided and plundered while seeking their treasures on the high seas. As a matter of fact, Fripp Island was deeded to a pirate (called a privateer) Captain Johannes Fripp, who was hired by the British to help defend its encampment located in nearby Beaufort against the marauding Spanish and French. Fripp Island was his reward for helping the British to successfully repel the enemy forces.
Much of Fripp Island remains unchanged today. The marshes still surround the island, the sea gives and takes sand from the shoreline, and the sunrises and sunsets are so beautiful that they will touch your heart. Fripp Island is located on the southernmost tip of South Carolina and features one of the most beautiful beaches in South Carolina. Located just 18 miles seaward from Beaufort, the island encompasses 3,000 acres of quietness and natural beauty to help soothe the wounds encountered in the real world. Hopefully, when you journey back into the real world refreshed and ready for whatever life has to offer.
Fripp Island protrudes into the Atlantic farther than any other piece of land along the S.C. coast. The year round mild temperatures allow vacationers to enjoy the outdoors summer, winter, fall and spring. Tennis, golf, charter fishing excursions, boating and kayaking are some of the activities that you can do. Take a cruise on a pontoon boat, either rented or as a tour, and get a botany lesson trying to identify the lush plant and wildlife that surround the Island. Visitors may also take advantage of the perfect temperatures to explore the Island on bicycle, scooter, golf cart, or paddle board. At certain times year tourists and visitors can witness the island’s turtle conservation programs in action.
Everything you need to make for a perfect vacation can be found on Fripp Island, but, bear in mind, it is a small island. Shopping for groceries, knick knacks and such is very limited, but available. In other words, if you need bread, you can find it but there will not be 20 brands to choose from. Restaurants offering locally caught seafood are on the island. If you want to prepare seafood at your rental unit, there are local fishermen parked on the road side with very fresh (right off the boat) catches of shrimp and whatever was running that day.
