Have you been to a typical tourist trap? Like Gatlinburg, Tennessee for instance: It’s all flash and go; neon and show. It wasn’t always that way. Many years ago, Gatlinburg was a small beautiful town that people passed through while visiting the mountains. Hiawassee is like that; a small beautiful town with the promise of having what you’re looking for…peace and tranquility. Think about it; there are mountains surrounding the town on one side, and Lake Chatuge surrounding it on the other side. Lake Chatuge was created by the Tennessee Valley Authority in the 1940s, and it borders both Georgia and North Carolina. It is considered to be one of most scenic lakes in the TVA reservoir system. To fully appreciate it, and the mountains, take a jaunt over the dam and espy a view you won't ever forget.

Hiawassee appeals to every level of outdoor enthusiast. If you enjoy the outdoors, Hiawassee will soon become one of favorite mountain vacation destinations. Like to hike? The Appalachian Trail runs through the eastern portion of the county, and there are access points along the way. For those wanting to hike on a smaller scale, there are plenty hiking trails in and around Hiawassee.  Some of these even lead to unforgettable views of waterfalls!!

The lake and the nearby rivers are also known for being one of the best fishing spots in the state. To make the most of your fishing experience, hire a local guide to show you the best spots. Lake Chatuge is the home to over a hundred types of bass so make sure you don’t miss out; hire someone who knows. Simply put, Hiawassee and Lake Chatuge fishing is fantastic. The fishing at Lake Chatuge is so amazing that bass fishing tournaments are a regular occurrence. ESPN broadcasts Lake Chatuge bass fishing events because of the great bass fishing.

There are so many more things to do and enjoy, but time and space limit the exploration of other events and things to do. Come, see for yourself, and enjoy the “enchanted valley”.
