The caverns were named after the small town of Luray that was founded in 1812 and became the county seat in 1831. Luray Caverns are adjacent to Luray and are considered to be the largest of most popular caverns on the east coast. Since the discovery in 1878, Luray Caverns now attracts over 500,000 visitors annually to explore the underground wonder.
With over 500 miles of biking and hiking trails, the Shenandoah National Park borders Page County. The park envelopes 196,000 acres of land and is kept immaculate. Actually, there isn’t much road litter and visible trash anywhere in the Shenandoah Valley.
Luray is a central gateway to the 106 mile Skyline Drive. This stretch of road has magnificent mountain views and over 2,000,000 travelers a year visit to marvel at its wonders.
The natives called this area the “Daughter of the Stars” back in the day and it is still an apt description. You really owe to yourself and your family to experience the natural beauty and hospitality of Luray.
