Saugerties, New York Vacation Rentals

About Saugerties, New York

Saugerties sits nestled between the Catskill Mountains and the Hudson River. In 1677 the Esopus Sachem Indian Tribe agreed to sell this parcel of land to Governor Edmund Andros for a piece of cloth, a shirt, a loaf of bread and maize. Pretty cheap, uh? Saugerties experienced minimal growth until the early 1800s when Henry Barclay moved into the area. Thus began the industrial era. In 1825 the population grew from 40 to over 4,000 residents. Immigrants throughout Europe settled in Saugerties to work in the mills. Today, visitors and tourists can still find evidence of the work done during this period.

As you stroll down the bluestone slab sidewalks it becomes obvious why Budget Travel named Saugerties one of America’s coolest small towns. You need to visit Saugerties and see for yourself. You will be in for a wonderful treat.
Oh, by the way, the name Saugerties derives its name from Dutch Zager's Killetje; Zager meaning sawyer or sawmill, and Kill meaning creek or stream, and the suffix "t j e" to indicate small or little.  What’s so unique about the name of the town is that it does not have some sort of Native American origination like most of the towns and villages in this part of the country.

Tot ziens----, that’s Dutch for “see you later”.
