About College Station, Texas

College Station, Texas is home to the main campus of Texas A&M University.  The city’s name and very existence is attributed to the college and the fact that it was first established as a layover for the train company. The origins of College Station date from 1860, when the Houston and Texas Central Railway began to build through the region. A few years later the site was chosen as the location for the proposed Agricultural and Mechanical College of Texas, in 1876 the school opened its doors as the first public institution of higher education in the state of Texas.

 The students that attend Texas A&M are known as Aggies. Have you ever wondered, “What’s an Aggie?” Don’t worry, you’re not alone.  In the early 1900s, the students were referred to as "Farmers." The term Aggie was first used in the 1920s, and in 1949, when the yearbook changed its name from The Longhorn to Aggieland, the college students were called Aggies. That is how it became the official student body nickname.

There are lots of perks to being a college town. Employment is good, the median income is slightly higher, and the number of activities and events are increased greatly. You don’t have to be an alumnus to enjoy College Station and neighboring Bryan. This is a community rich in tradition and history; the roots run deep in this part of Central Texas. The number of quality activities and attractions is amazing. There are nine museums in the area, including the nationally recognized George Bush Presidential Library and Museum, the Brazos Valley African American Museum, and the Brazos Valley Museum of Natural History. If you like to partake of the fruit of the vine, then plan on finding the time to stop by the Messina Hof Winery and Resort, especially during the harvest season, and enjoy a wonderful tour of the facility and true Texas wine-tasting.

Whatever brings you to College Station, be it a business conference, a parents' weekend, a class reunion at Texas A&M University or you’re just coming for a vacation, don’t be surprised to be greeted with a Texas-sized "Howdy".  Visit the small cafes, restaurants, and eateries and savor the locally grown organic dishes, gourmet dining, or BBQ prepared by locals.
