There’s just something about the coastal cities along the coast of the Carolinas, Georgia and Virginia. They were all founded around the same time and have similar architecture. Visiting the downtown areas of any of these towns and overlooking a bay or river gives you a sense of stepping back in time; reminiscing about the way it was before modernization, before electricity or cars.
Wilmington, NC is one of these grand old bastions of yesteryear. However, modern day Wilmington garners local, regional and national awards like it’s easy. Year in and year out, Wilmington ranks near the top, or at the top, of many rankings, earning Wilmington national recognition. This attention adds credibility to Wilmington as an appeal to vacationers, visitors and businesses. Wilmington has been voted “America’s Best Riverfront” by USA Today. Wilmington has been ranked #5 on Forbes list of America’s Smartest Cities. In 2011, Outside Magazine named Wilmington “One of the Best Towns” and also predicted that the Wilmington area would be “The Next Big Thing.” Bloomberg Business Week has ranked Wilmington “The #7 Most Fun, Affordable City.” Forbes has also rated the Wilmington area as one of the 15 best in the country for business and careers. Wilmington’s appeal is undeniable.
Downtown Wilmington offers a mixture of a Southern port complete with a cobblestone river front street, horse drawn carriages and an underlying vibrancy that is unmistakable. Wilmington’s Historic River District includes great dining, unique shops and a raucous nightlife. While strolling downtown Wilmington, be sure to visit some of the quaint cafés or boutiques. Board the Battleship North Carolina and step back in time as you walk through and around this huge ship.
If you come to Wilmington and visit the nearby beaches, or vacation at the nearby beaches and come to Wilmington to visit matters not as long as you spend some time in the downtown area. Wilmington is amazing, but you have to see for yourself. Plan a trip to Wilmington and spend a day or two just browsing around the waterfront area. It’s worth it.
